Looking at crypto sectors in a bear market, the ones that survived best in 2018 and 2022 were those with real usage and no hidden dependence on hype or leverage: bitcoin and ether, fully reserved fiat-backed stablecoins and the leading decentralized finance protocols all kept functioning. Even so, "survived" did not mean "held their value." Bitcoin fell by more than three-quarters from its peak in both downturns, and most other tokens fell further. The sectors that collapsed outright were those built on unsustainable yields, opaque balance sheets or pure speculation.

This guide reviews what history up to mid-2025 shows about sector resilience, identifies the traits that helped survivors, and explains how to use those lessons when building a portfolio for 2026 and 2027, whatever the market does.

How Sectors Fared in the 2018 and 2022 Bear Markets

Sector2018 bear market2022 bear marketOverall pattern
BitcoinFell sharply, network unaffectedFell sharply, network unaffectedSurvived; deep drawdowns
Ether and major smart-contract chainsEther fell sharply; many rival chains fadedFell sharply; Ethereum completed the Merge during the downturnLeaders survived; many challengers faded
Fiat-backed stablecoinsUsage grewLargely held pegs; demand for safety roseResilient, with issuer risks
Algorithmic stablecoinsSmall sectorTerra's UST collapsed in May 2022Failed badly

Centralized lendersSmall sectorSeveral froze withdrawals and went bankruptFailed badly
Leading DeFi protocolsEarly stageKept operating; tokens fell heavilyInfrastructure survived
NFTs, metaverse, meme coinsSmall sectorMost fell steeplyWeak survival rate

These are broad patterns. Individual projects within each sector varied widely, and survival of a protocol did not protect token holders from large losses. Our article on crypto market cycles puts these phases in context.

What the Survivors Had in Common

Across both downturns, the sectors and projects that kept functioning tended to share these traits:

  1. 1Real, repeatable usage. People used them for something other than speculation, such as payments, settlement, trading or borrowing.
  2. 2Transparency. Transactions, reserves or collateral could be verified, at least in part.
  3. 3No hidden leverage. They did not rely on borrowing short and lending long, or on rehypothecating customer funds.
  4. 4Sustainable economics. Yields and rewards came from real activity rather than from new deposits or endless token emissions.
  5. 5Battle-tested security. Code and infrastructure had survived years of attacks.
  6. 6Decentralization or redundancy. No single company's failure could stop the system.

Why Some Sectors Collapsed

The failures followed recognizable patterns:

  • Unsustainable yields. Terra's ecosystem offered high yields on UST that depended on continued growth. When confidence broke, the stablecoin and its LUNA token spiraled down within days.
  • Opaque balance sheets. Several centralized lenders and the FTX exchange took risks customers could not see. When markets fell, the gaps were exposed. See what happens to your crypto if an exchange goes bankrupt.
  • Hype without products. Many ICO, metaverse and meme tokens depended on attention, and attention disappeared in bear markets.
  • Token supply overhang. Projects with large unlocks during downturns faced persistent selling.

Even resilient sectors faced stress: a major fiat-backed stablecoin briefly lost its peg in March 2023 after its issuer disclosed exposure to a failed US bank, a reminder that stablecoins carry issuer and banking risks. Our guide to stablecoin depegs explains the mechanics.

Newer sectors without a bear market track record

Several sectors that grew after 2022, such as liquid restaking, memecoin launchpads, AI-themed tokens and tokenized real-world assets, had not gone through a full crypto bear market by mid-2025. Their resilience is untested. That does not mean they will fail, only that there is no historical evidence either way, so it is sensible to treat them with extra caution and smaller position sizes. We cover this in more detail in What Comes After a Bull Run? Bear Market Patterns and Preparation.

Using These Lessons for 2026 and 2027

History does not guarantee that the same sectors will survive the next downturn, and new sectors have emerged since 2022. You can, however, apply the survivor traits to anything you hold:

  1. 1Classify each holding by sector and ask whether it has real usage independent of its token price.
  2. 2Check transparency: can you verify reserves, collateral or on-chain activity?
  3. 3Look for hidden leverage or unsustainable yields, especially in products promising steady returns.
  4. 4Review supply: how much is still locked, and when does it unlock?
  5. 5Stress-test your portfolio: if everything fell as much as in 2018 or 2022, what would your portfolio be worth, and would you be forced to sell?

Risk Management: Survival Is Not the Same as Profit

The most important lesson from past bear markets is that even the strongest assets fell hard. Practical rules:

  • Size positions for drawdowns of 75% or more in volatile assets. See position sizing and risk management basics.
  • Avoid leverage, which turned many bear-market losses into total wipeouts.
  • Spread custody risk rather than keeping everything on one platform.
  • Beware of recovery offers. After crashes, scammers target victims with fake "fund recovery" services.

Bottom line

Crypto sectors in a bear market have fared very differently: bitcoin, ether, fully reserved stablecoins and leading DeFi protocols kept working through 2018 and 2022, while ICO tokens, algorithmic stablecoins, opaque lenders and hype-driven sectors largely collapsed. But survival never meant protection from deep price drops. Look for real usage, transparency and sustainable economics in what you hold, size positions for severe drawdowns, and follow the live Bitcoin price page to see how conditions develop.

Vanliga frågor

Which crypto sectors held up best in past bear markets?

In the 2018 and 2022 bear markets, bitcoin and ether fell sharply but survived and kept functioning, fully reserved fiat-backed stablecoins largely held their pegs and grew in importance, and leading DeFi protocols kept operating without interruption, even though their tokens fell heavily. Survival of the network did not mean protection from price declines.

Which crypto sectors were hit hardest in bear markets?

The hardest hit were sectors that depended on hype or hidden leverage: ICO tokens after 2017, algorithmic stablecoins such as Terra's UST in 2022, centralized crypto lenders that froze withdrawals in 2022, and many NFT, metaverse and meme projects. Many of these tokens lost nearly all of their value.

Will the same sectors survive the next bear market?

Not necessarily. Past results reflect specific events, and every cycle introduces new sectors with different risks. Look for the traits that helped survivors, such as real usage, transparent reserves, no reliance on unsustainable yields and robust security, rather than assuming a sector label guarantees resilience.

How much did bitcoin fall in past bear markets?

In both the 2018 and 2022 bear markets, bitcoin fell by more than three-quarters from its previous all-time high before recovering in later years. Ether and most altcoins fell by similar or larger percentages. This history is why position sizing and avoiding leverage matter so much.
