Solana in the Next Bull Run: Strengths and Weak Spots
Solana bull run outlook without hype: the network's strengths, its weak spots, what past cycles showed and the signals to watch for SOL in 2026 and 2027.
Solana enters any future bull run with real strengths — fast, low-cost transactions, a single high-performance chain, and one of crypto's most active trading and consumer ecosystems — but also with weak spots, including a history of outages, high hardware demands on validators, a market shaped by speculative memecoin activity, and stiff competition. Whether those strengths outweigh the weaknesses in 2026 or 2027 is unknowable in advance; what you can do is track the evidence.
Solana's history is a lesson in cycle risk. SOL rose many times over in 2021, fell by more than 90% from its peak during the 2022 bear market and the collapse of FTX, then staged a strong recovery in 2023 and 2024. This guide looks at what drove those swings and which signals matter next. For the basics, start with What Is Solana?, and follow the live SOL price for current data.
Solana's Strengths
Speed and low fees
Solana processes transactions in parallel on a single chain, giving fast confirmations and fees usually measured in fractions of a cent. That makes it suitable for trading, payments and consumer apps where Ethereum mainnet fees are too high. For a related outlook, read Bonk price prediction 2026–2027.
A single, unified chain
Unlike Ethereum's rollup-centric approach, Solana keeps activity on one layer. Users and apps share the same liquidity without bridging between layer-2 networks. Our comparison of Ethereum vs Solana explains the trade-offs.
An active ecosystem
Solana built strong positions in decentralized trading, memecoin launchpads, payments experiments and consumer apps. Wallet and tooling quality improved considerably after 2022.
Institutional interest
Investment firms filed for exchange-traded products holding SOL in the US. Whether such products exist and attract demand is something to check live; the ETF page tracks available funds.
Solana's Weak Spots
Reliability history
Solana suffered several network outages in 2021 and 2022 in which block production stopped for hours. Reliability improved afterward, and new independent clients such as Firedancer aim to reduce single-software risk, but a major outage during a bull market would test confidence.
Hardware demands and decentralization
Running a Solana validator requires powerful, expensive hardware and good bandwidth. Critics argue this limits who can participate and concentrates the network among well-funded operators.
Speculative dependence
Much of Solana's 2024 activity came from memecoin trading. If speculation cools, fees and activity could fall sharply. Our guide on memecoins in a bull run explains why that activity is fragile.
Competition and supply
Other high-performance chains and Ethereum layer 2s compete for the same users and developers. SOL supply also grows through staking rewards, which adds steady selling pressure if demand stalls. Our Aptos (APT) price scenarios for 2026–2027 apply the same catalyst-and-risk approach to a related project.
What Past Cycles Show
| Period | What happened | Lesson |
|---|---|---|
| 2021 | Rapid growth in DeFi and NFTs; SOL rose many times over | Fast chains attract users when fees elsewhere are high |
| 2022 | Outages, FTX collapse, broad bear market; SOL fell by more than 90% | Ecosystem concentration and reliability are real risks |
| 2023–2024 | Recovery driven by trading, airdrops and memecoins | Retail activity can drive a strong rebound |
Signals to Watch for Solana in 2026 and 2027
- 1Fee revenue and real usage. Fees paid by users are harder to fake than transaction counts, which can be inflated by bots.
- 2Stablecoin supply on Solana. Growth suggests the chain is used for payments and DeFi, not just speculation.
- 3Reliability. A long uptime record and growing client diversity reduce a key historical risk.
- 4Developer activity. Are new applications launching and keeping users?
- 5Concentration of activity. If one launchpad or app generates most fees, the ecosystem is more fragile than it looks.
Try to compare these signals over months rather than days. Short bursts of activity around a popular token launch can make a chain look busier than its underlying user base really is, while steady growth through quiet market periods is a stronger sign of lasting demand.
Scenarios for SOL
- Bull: a strong market with growing payments, DeFi and consumer usage, a clean reliability record and demand from investment products. SOL could outperform many large caps, with sharp corrections along the way.
- Base: usage grows but competition intensifies; SOL moves broadly with the market.
- Bear: a risk-off market, a major outage or a collapse in speculative activity; SOL could fall harder than bitcoin, as it did in 2022.
Managing Risk With SOL
- Size positions for volatility. SOL has historically moved far more than bitcoin in both directions. See position sizing and risk management basics.
- Avoid leverage. Fast moves on Solana can trigger liquidations within minutes.
- Be careful with memecoins and new tokens. Many Solana tokens are created with mint or freeze authority still active; learn how to check that in our guide to mint authority and freeze authority.
- Watch for wallet drainers. Fake airdrop and claim sites targeting Solana users spike in active markets. Never sign transactions you do not understand.
- Take profits in stages if a rally develops, instead of trying to sell the top.
- Understand staking terms. Staking SOL earns rewards but involves choosing a validator and waiting for stake to deactivate before moving it.
Bottom line
Solana could play a big role in a future bull run thanks to its speed, low fees and active ecosystem, but its weak spots — past outages, decentralization concerns, supply growth and reliance on speculative activity — are just as real. Track usage, fees and reliability through 2026 and 2027, keep your position sized for deep drawdowns, and verify every token and site you interact with.
Vanliga frågor
Will Solana do well in the next bull run?
Nobody can know. Solana has strengths that attracted users and developers, including fast, cheap transactions and a large trading and memecoin ecosystem, but it also faces competition, past reliability problems and supply that grows through staking rewards. Its performance in any future rally will depend on usage, market conditions and sentiment that cannot be predicted.
Why did Solana fall so much in 2022?
SOL fell along with the whole crypto market as interest rates rose, and it was hit especially hard by the collapse of FTX and Alameda Research in November 2022, which were closely associated with the Solana ecosystem and held large amounts of SOL. Repeated network outages earlier in 2021 and 2022 had also damaged confidence.
What is Firedancer?
Firedancer is an independent validator client for Solana developed by Jump Crypto. A second, separately built client reduces the risk that a single software bug halts the whole network, which was a cause of some past outages. Its rollout and adoption by validators is one of the reliability signals worth following.
Is SOL inflationary?
Yes. New SOL is issued as staking rewards on a schedule designed to decline gradually over time toward a long-term floor, while a portion of transaction fees is burned. Whether net supply grows quickly or slowly depends on that issuance rate and on network activity, so check current figures rather than relying on old numbers.
