Web3 domains are human-readable names, such as alice.eth or alice.sol, that are registered on a blockchain and controlled by a crypto wallet; they can stand in for long wallet addresses and also point to websites, profiles and other records. Instead of copying a 42-character address, you can send funds to a name, and the wallet looks up the address the name points to.

The best-known system is the Ethereum Name Service (ENS) on Ethereum, with other systems on networks such as Solana. Web3 domains are useful, but they are not the same as regular web domains, and they come with specific risks around expiry, look-alike names and limited browser support. This guide explains how they work and how to use them safely.

How Web3 Domains Work

Traditional domains such as example.com are managed through the Domain Name System (DNS), coordinated by ICANN and operated by registries and registrars. You rent a name through a registrar account.

A Web3 domain works differently:

  1. 1Registration. You register a name by interacting with a smart contract, paying with crypto.
  2. 2Ownership. The name is held by your wallet, often as an NFT, so you can transfer it like other tokens.
  3. 3Records. You set records that the name points to, such as wallet addresses for different blockchains, a content hash for a decentralized website, an avatar or social profiles.
  4. 4Resolution. When a wallet or app looks up the name, it reads those records from the blockchain to find the address.

Some systems also support reverse resolution, which lets an address display a "primary name." That is why some apps show alice.eth instead of 0x1234…abcd.

The Main Web3 Domain Systems

SystemCommon endingsUnderlying chainPayment model
Ethereum Name Service (ENS).eth, plus imported DNS namesEthereumAnnual registration with renewals
Solana Name Service.solSolanaVaries by provider
Unstoppable Domains.crypto, .nft, .x and othersPolygon and other chainsTypically a one-time purchase
Space ID and othersVarious, including .bnbBNB Chain and othersVaries

ENS is governed by the ENS DAO and has its own governance token. If you plan to register a .eth name, our step-by-step guide on how to use ENS domains walks through the process. If Ethereum Name Service is new to you, start with what Ethereum Name Service (ENS) is and how it works.

What Web3 Domains Are Used For

  • Simpler payments. Share one name instead of several long addresses.
  • On-chain identity. Many apps display your name and avatar, which helps others recognize you.
  • Decentralized websites. A name can point to content stored on IPFS or similar systems; see our guide to decentralized storage.
  • Login and profiles. Some apps use names for sign-in with a wallet and public profiles.
  • Organization names. Projects and DAOs use subdomains, such as team.project.eth, to label wallets.

Web3 Domains vs Traditional Domains

FeatureTraditional domain (.com)Web3 domain (.eth)
Controlled byRegistrar accountYour wallet keys
Can be suspended by a companyYes, by registrar or registryHarder, but front ends and gateways can block names
Works in standard browsersYesUsually needs extensions, gateways or specific browsers
Points to wallet addressesNot nativelyYes
Lost if you lose your keysNo, you can recover the accountYes

Some namespaces also overlap with traditional top-level domains or with each other, so the same ending may mean different things in different systems.

How to Check a Web3 Domain Before Trusting It

Because names live on a public blockchain, you can inspect them yourself:

  • Look up the name in the official app of the naming service, reached by typing its address rather than clicking a link.
  • Check the owner and the records. See which wallet owns the name and which addresses it points to for each chain.
  • Check the expiry date for renewable names. A name that is about to expire may soon change hands.
  • Look at the history. Recently transferred or recently changed records deserve extra caution.
  • Compare with official channels. If a project says its treasury is project.eth, confirm that on its website and documentation.

Risks and How to Avoid Them

  1. 1Expiry. If a renewable name expires, someone else can register it and receive payments meant for you. Set reminders and renew early.
  2. 2Look-alike names. Scammers register names with small spelling changes or visually similar characters. Check spelling carefully and be wary of unusual characters.
  3. 3Changed records. A name's owner can change where it points. A name you trusted last month may point elsewhere today.
  4. 4Key loss. If you lose access to the wallet that owns the name, you lose the name.
  5. 5Phishing. Fake registration sites and fake "renewal" emails try to get you to connect your wallet or sign malicious transactions.
  6. 6Multi-chain confusion. A name may have different addresses set for different chains; make sure you send on the right network.

Before sending a large amount to a Web3 domain:

  • Confirm the resolved address with the recipient through a separate channel.
  • Check that the wallet displays the full resolved address, and compare it.
  • Send a small test amount first, as covered in our guide to sending crypto without losing it.

Bottom line

Web3 domains turn long, error-prone wallet addresses into readable names and give users a portable on-chain identity. They are owned through your wallet, not an account, which brings both control and responsibility. Renew names on time, protect the wallet that owns them, double-check spelling and resolved addresses, and test before large transfers. For more on blockchain-based identity, browse our Web3 guides.

Частые вопросы

What is a Web3 domain?

A Web3 domain is a human-readable name, such as alice.eth, registered on a blockchain and controlled by a crypto wallet. It can point to wallet addresses, a website, profile details and other records, so people can send crypto to a name instead of a long address.

Do Web3 domains work in a normal web browser?

Usually not by default. Most standard browsers resolve traditional DNS domains such as .com, not blockchain names. Web3 domains can be accessed through supporting wallets, browser extensions, specific browsers or gateway services. Support varies, so check before relying on a Web3 domain for a public website.

Do Web3 domains expire?

It depends on the provider. ENS .eth names are registered for a period and must be renewed, with a grace period after expiry. Some other providers sell names with a one-time payment and no renewal fees. Always check the renewal rules, because an expired name can be registered by someone else.

Can someone fake a Web3 domain?

Yes. Scammers register look-alike names with similar spelling or characters, and names can be transferred or expire. Before sending a large amount to a name, confirm the resolved address with the recipient through another channel and send a small test transaction first.
