Volume analysis is the study of how much of an asset is traded alongside its price moves, used to judge whether a trend, breakout or reversal has real participation behind it. In crypto, rising prices on rising volume suggest broad conviction, while big moves on thin volume are easier to reverse — but only if the volume itself is genuine.

Price tells you what happened; volume hints at how many people agreed. That makes volume one of the most useful supporting indicators for beginners and experienced traders alike, as long as you also understand its weaknesses in a market where some platforms inflate their numbers.

What Trading Volume Measures

Trading volume is the total amount of an asset bought and sold during a time period, usually shown in the asset's units or in dollars. On a candlestick chart, each candle has a matching volume bar, often colored green or red to match whether the price closed up or down. If you are new to the concept, start with our explainer on what trading volume is.

In crypto, you will see several kinds of volume:

Volume typeWhat it countsWhy it matters
Spot volume (centralized exchanges)Buying and selling of the actual assetClosest to real demand, if the exchange is reputable
DEX volumeSwaps recorded on-chainTransparent, but can include bot and wash activity
Derivatives volumeFutures and perpetual contractsOften much larger; shows leveraged speculation
24-hour aggregated volumeSum across many venuesConvenient, but quality depends on the venues included

Core Principles of Volume Analysis

In a healthy uptrend, volume tends to expand on up days and contract on pullbacks. In a downtrend, the reverse is true. When volume supports the direction of the trend, the trend is considered more robust.

2. Breakouts need volume

A price breaking above resistance or below support is more convincing when volume rises sharply at the same time. A breakout on light volume is more likely to fail and fall back into its range — a "false breakout." Our guide to support and resistance explains how these levels form.

3. Divergence is a warning

If price keeps making new highs while volume keeps shrinking, fewer participants are pushing it higher. That is called a bearish divergence. It does not mean price must fall, but it suggests the move is getting tired.

4. Climaxes often mark exhaustion

Extremely high volume after a long move — a blow-off top or a capitulation low — can signal that most willing buyers or sellers have acted. In crypto, these spikes often coincide with waves of forced liquidations in leveraged markets.

Useful Volume Indicators

  • On-balance volume (OBV). Adds volume on up days and subtracts it on down days, creating a running total. If OBV rises while price is flat, buyers may be accumulating.
  • Volume-weighted average price (VWAP). The average price weighted by volume over a session. Traders use it as a reference for whether current prices are "expensive" or "cheap" relative to where most trading happened.
  • Volume profile. Shows how much volume traded at each price level rather than each time period. Price levels with heavy volume often act as support or resistance.
  • Volume moving average. A simple average of recent volume, used to judge whether today's volume is unusually high or low.

The Fake Volume Problem

Crypto has a long-standing issue with inflated volume. Some exchanges and token projects engage in wash trading — trading with themselves to make an asset look more active than it is. This can make a token appear liquid when you could not actually sell a meaningful amount without moving the price.

Ways to sanity-check volume:

  1. 1Compare venues. If one obscure exchange reports far more volume than every major exchange for the same token, be skeptical.
  2. 2Check order book depth. Real liquidity shows up as meaningful bids and asks near the current price. Huge volume with a thin order book is a red flag.
  3. 3Look at trade patterns. Repeated same-size trades at regular intervals suggest bots.
  4. 4Compare with holders and usage. A token with tiny holder numbers but enormous volume deserves scrutiny.

Putting Volume Analysis Into Practice

A simple routine for checking a move:

  1. 1Open the chart for the asset, for example Bitcoin, and enable the volume bars.
  2. 2Add a 20-period moving average of volume to see what "normal" looks like.
  3. 3When price makes a notable move, ask: is volume above or below average?
  4. 4Check whether the move was led by spot markets or by derivatives, if that data is available.
  5. 5Look for a follow-through candle before acting on a breakout.
  6. 6Set risk limits in advance; volume improves odds but never guarantees an outcome.

Common Mistakes

  • Treating every volume spike as bullish. Panic selling and liquidations also create spikes.
  • Ignoring the time frame. Volume patterns on a 5-minute chart can contradict those on a daily chart.
  • Comparing volume across very different assets. Large and small tokens have very different "normal" volume.
  • Trusting aggregated numbers blindly. Totals can include low-quality venues.
  • Using volume alone. Combine it with price structure, trend and broader context.

Bottom line

Volume analysis adds a second dimension to price: participation. Rising price with rising genuine volume suggests conviction; moves on thin or suspicious volume deserve caution. Learn the basic patterns, verify that the volume is real and use it alongside other evidence. You can check live trading volume on each coin page at Certified Crypto Market before forming a view.

अक्सर पूछे जाने वाले सवाल

What does high trading volume mean in crypto?

High volume means many units changed hands in a period, which shows strong interest. Combined with price direction, it can suggest conviction behind a move. But high volume can also come from panic selling, forced liquidations, news spikes or fake wash trading, so look at context before drawing conclusions.

Is rising price on falling volume bearish?

It can be a warning sign rather than a signal on its own. A rally on shrinking volume suggests fewer participants are driving the move, which may make it fragile. Many rallies continue for a while on lower volume, so traders usually wait for price confirmation before acting on it.

Which volume figure should I trust?

Volume from regulated, well-known exchanges and from on-chain DEX data is generally more reliable than totals from obscure platforms. Aggregated volume can include inflated numbers from exchanges with weak oversight. Compare volume with order book depth and with the number of trades to judge whether it looks genuine.

What is the difference between spot volume and derivatives volume?

Spot volume counts actual buying and selling of the asset. Derivatives volume counts trading in futures and perpetual contracts, which often uses leverage and can be much larger. Derivatives-led moves can reverse quickly when leveraged positions are liquidated, so it helps to know which market is driving the action.
