Dogecoin vs Shiba Inu

Dogecoin vs Shiba Inu compared: technology, supply, origins, ecosystems and risks of DOGE and SHIB, plus how to avoid the fake tokens that copy both brands.

Dogecoin (DOGE) and Shiba Inu (SHIB) are the two best-known dog-themed memecoins, but they are built very differently: Dogecoin is a 2013 proof-of-work coin with its own blockchain and ongoing issuance, while Shiba Inu is a 2020 token on Ethereum with a fixed, enormous supply and a wider ecosystem of related tokens and apps.

Because both are driven heavily by community and attention, people often treat them as interchangeable. Understanding how they actually differ helps you judge each one's risks on its own terms — and avoid the many copycat tokens that use both names.

Origins

Dogecoin was created in December 2013 by Billy Markus and Jackson Palmer as a lighthearted take on cryptocurrency, featuring the Doge meme of a Shiba Inu dog. It is maintained by open-source developers with support from the Dogecoin Foundation. Read more in our Dogecoin explainer.

Shiba Inu launched in August 2020, created by a pseudonymous founder known as "Ryoshi." It was marketed openly as a challenger to Dogecoin. At launch, half of the total supply was sent to Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin. In 2021 he burned the large majority of those tokens and donated much of the rest to charity, including a COVID-19 relief fund for India.

Technology and Ecosystem

Dogecoin

Dogecoin's design is simple: a payments-focused proof-of-work chain with one-minute blocks. That simplicity means fewer moving parts but also fewer applications. Most activity involves sending, receiving and trading DOGE.

Shiba Inu

Shiba Inu grew into a broader ecosystem. It includes ShibaSwap, a decentralized exchange, and Shibarium, a layer-2 network intended to lower transaction costs. Related tokens such as BONE and LEASH play roles in that ecosystem. More components can mean more uses, but they also create more places for bugs, bridge risks and confusion about which token does what. Our Shiba Inu (SHIB) explainer covers the project's basics, use cases and risks.

Supply and Tokenomics

Dogecoin adds a fixed 10,000 DOGE per block, which means a steady stream of new coins every year. The percentage inflation rate falls slowly as total supply grows.

Shiba Inu started with a fixed supply of one quadrillion tokens, and no ongoing mining issuance. Some tokens have been sent to burn addresses, reducing the circulating amount. The community often promotes burning, but burns are only meaningful if they are large relative to the total supply.

The unit price is a common source of confusion. SHIB trades at a tiny fraction of a cent because there are so many tokens. A lower unit price does not make an asset more likely to rise — what matters is total value. Our guide to market capitalization explains why. Shared Risks

  1. 1Extreme volatility. Both have experienced huge rallies followed by deep declines.
  2. 2Attention-driven pricing. Prices often move on social media trends rather than usage.
  3. 3Concentrated holdings. Large wallets, including exchange wallets, hold significant shares of each supply.
  4. 4Scams and copycats. Fake "DOGE 2.0," "SHIB airdrop" and giveaway schemes are common.
  5. 5Limited fundamentals. Neither generates cash flow, and their value depends on continued interest.

Risks Specific to Each

  • Dogecoin: small core development effort and unlimited supply.
  • Shiba Inu: pseudonymous founding team, dependence on Ethereum and its own bridges and layer-2 network, and a multi-token ecosystem that can confuse newcomers.

Which Questions to Ask Before Choosing Either

Rather than asking which will rise more — something nobody can know — ask questions that reveal risk:

  1. 1Do I understand where this asset lives? DOGE on its own chain, SHIB on Ethereum, and wrapped versions elsewhere all behave differently.
  2. 2How would I store it? Check that your wallet supports the right network.
  3. 3What am I relying on? For DOGE, mainly its miners and developers. For SHIB, Ethereum, the token contract and any bridges or layer-2 networks you use.
  4. 4Why am I buying now? If the answer is a trending post or a friend's tip, that is a signal to slow down.
  5. 5How much could I lose without harm? Memecoins have fallen by most of their value in past downturns.

Our general guide to memecoins covers the wider category.

How to Avoid Fake DOGE and SHIB Tokens

  • Dogecoin has no contract on its own chain. Any "Dogecoin token" on another network is wrapped, pegged or fake — check who issues it.
  • For SHIB, compare the Ethereum contract address with the official project site and an independent source before buying or adding it to your wallet.
  • Ignore airdrop and giveaway offers in replies, comments and direct messages.

Our guide on how to check a token's contract address walks through the checks.

Bottom line

Dogecoin is an older, simpler proof-of-work coin with steady issuance; Shiba Inu is a younger Ethereum token with a fixed giant supply and a larger ecosystem. Both are speculative memecoins whose prices depend on attention, so neither should be treated as a safe store of value. If you hold either, size the position for the possibility of large losses and verify every token address you use.

Questions fréquentes

What is the main difference between Dogecoin and Shiba Inu?

Dogecoin is the native coin of its own proof-of-work blockchain, launched in 2013. Shiba Inu is a token launched in 2020 on Ethereum, which means it relies on Ethereum's network rather than its own original blockchain. They also differ in supply: Dogecoin has steady new issuance, while SHIB launched with a fixed, very large supply.

Why is Shiba Inu's price so small?

SHIB launched with a total supply of one quadrillion tokens, so each token represents a tiny fraction of the project's total value. A low price per token does not make it cheap or more likely to rise. Market capitalization, not unit price, is the meaningful measure of size.

Is Dogecoin or Shiba Inu safer?

Both are highly speculative memecoins, and either can lose much of its value quickly. Dogecoin has a longer history and its own blockchain; Shiba Inu has a broader ecosystem of tokens and apps, which adds smart contract risk. Neither is safe in the sense of protecting your money.

Does Shiba Inu have a contract address?

Yes. Because SHIB is an ERC-20 token, it has a contract address on Ethereum, and wrapped or bridged versions exist on other networks. Scammers deploy many fake SHIB tokens, so always confirm the address against the official project site and an independent source.
