Token unlocks move prices because they increase the supply that can be sold: when team, investor or ecosystem tokens vest, holders who received them cheaply may sell, and markets often price that risk in before and after the date. Many tokens launched in recent years still have large locked allocations, so unlock calendars are likely to matter throughout 2026 and 2027.

This guide explains how vesting works, why some unlocks matter more than others, how to read an unlock schedule and how to manage the risk in your own portfolio.

How Vesting Schedules Work

When a project launches a token, it usually allocates supply to several groups: the community (airdrops, incentives), the team, early investors, advisors, a foundation and an ecosystem fund. To prevent insiders from selling immediately, most of these allocations vest over time. We cover this in more detail in Airdrops in the Next Bull Run.

Common structures:

  • Cliff: nothing unlocks for a set period, commonly 12 months, then a large tranche releases at once.
  • Linear vesting: tokens release gradually, for example every month or every block, over two to four years.
  • Cliff plus linear: a one-year cliff followed by monthly unlocks is common for team and investor allocations.
  • Emissions: staking rewards or liquidity incentives that add new tokens continuously.

Our explainers on vesting schedules and token unlocks and tokenomics cover the basics in more depth.

Why Some Unlocks Move Prices More Than Others

Not every unlock is equal. Ask these questions:

QuestionHigher selling riskLower selling risk
Who receives the tokens?Early investors with low cost basisTreasury or ecosystem fund with spending rules
How big is it vs circulating supply?A large percentage increaseA small fraction
How big is it vs daily volume?Several days of volumeA small share of one day
Is it a cliff or linear?Large single cliffSmall, steady releases
Market conditions?Weak demand, falling pricesStrong demand absorbing supply

Recipients do not always sell. Some stake, some hold, and some hedge in advance using derivatives, which can push prices down before the unlock even happens. That is one reason the price reaction around a well-known date is often unpredictable.

Low Float, High FDV: The Longest Shadow

Many tokens have launched with a small share of supply circulating, a pattern called "low float, high FDV." The fully diluted valuation (price times total supply) can be many times larger than the market cap.

For example, with hypothetical numbers: a token with 15% of supply circulating at launch would need to absorb the other 85% over the coming years. Even if demand grows, the price can struggle because supply grows too. Read market cap vs fully diluted valuation to understand why this gap matters.

This dynamic is relevant for many layer 1 and layer 2 tokens, such as Arbitrum, and for many tokens launched during 2024 and 2025. Check each token's circulating and total supply on its live coin page rather than relying on old figures.

How to Read an Unlock Calendar

Follow these steps for any token you hold or are researching:

  1. 1Find the official allocation table in the project's documentation or whitepaper.
  2. 2Note the vesting terms for each group: cliff length, vesting period and release frequency.
  3. 3Check an unlock tracker for upcoming dates and sizes, and cross-check it with the official docs.
  4. 4Calculate the percentage increase in circulating supply for each major unlock.
  5. 5Compare with liquidity by looking at average daily trading volume.
  6. 6Watch on-chain movements. Large transfers from vesting contracts or insider wallets to exchanges can be an early sign of selling. Our guide to tracking whale wallets responsibly explains how.

Be cautious if a project changes its vesting schedule without clear explanation or if the docs and on-chain data disagree.

Unlock Scenarios for 2026 and 2027

Supportive scenario

Strong market demand and growing usage absorb new supply. Recipients stake or hold, and unlocks pass with little lasting effect.

Neutral scenario

Prices drift lower into large unlocks and recover partly afterward. Tokens with steady linear vesting underperform peers with fully circulating supply, but without dramatic drops.

Negative scenario

Weak demand meets large cliffs. Early investors sell into thin liquidity, and the price falls sharply. Repeated unlocks keep pressure on the token for months. For a related outlook, read GMX price prediction 2026–2027.

Our deeper guide on token unlocks and price impact looks at the mechanics.

Managing Unlock Risk

  • Check the calendar before buying. A large unlock in the next few weeks is information you should have.
  • Prefer smaller positions in low-float tokens. Ongoing dilution makes them riskier. Our position sizing guide explains how to set limits.
  • Avoid leverage around unlock dates. Volatility tends to rise, and short-term traders can push prices sharply in both directions.
  • Do not trust "unlock is priced in" claims blindly. Sometimes it is, sometimes it is not.
  • Beware fake "claim your unlocked tokens" sites. Scammers impersonate projects around vesting events and airdrops; only use links from official channels.

Bottom line

Token unlocks are one of the most predictable sources of supply in crypto, which makes them one of the easiest risks to research. Read the vesting schedule, measure unlocks against circulating supply and trading volume, and size positions with dilution in mind. Check live supply figures on each coin page rather than relying on headlines.

Sıkça sorulan sorular

What is a token unlock?

A token unlock is the moment when tokens that were locked under a vesting schedule become transferable. Locked tokens usually belong to the team, early investors, advisors or an ecosystem fund. Once unlocked, the holders can sell, stake or move them, which increases the supply that can reach the market.

Do token unlocks always make the price fall?

No. An unlock increases potential supply, but the effect depends on who receives the tokens, whether they intend to sell, how large the unlock is compared with daily trading volume, and overall market demand. Markets often anticipate well-known unlocks, so some price effect can happen before the date.

What is the difference between a cliff and linear vesting?

A cliff is a period, often a year, during which no tokens unlock, followed by a large release on the cliff date. Linear vesting releases tokens gradually, for example monthly or daily, over a set period. Many projects combine both: a one-year cliff followed by monthly unlocks for several years.

Where can I check a token's unlock schedule?

Start with the project's official documentation or tokenomics page, which should describe allocations and vesting. Unlock-tracking dashboards summarize upcoming events, and on-chain data can show whether vesting contracts are releasing tokens. Compare circulating supply with total supply on the coin's live page.
