The Independent Community Bankers of America (ICBA) has sued the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency (OCC), the US federal bank regulator, over national trust bank charters granted to crypto companies. The group argues the OCC has overstepped the authority Congress gave it.

What happened

According to CryptoSlate, the ICBA filed the lawsuit in federal court in Washington on October 2. That was two weeks after the OCC approved charters for Agora National Trust Bank, Catena Trust Bank and Bastion Platforms.

Decrypt reports that the ICBA says these charters give crypto firms a "side door into the banking system" without the safeguards that apply to traditional banks. CoinDesk and Cointelegraph report the group's central claim: that the OCC acted beyond its legal mandate.

Why it matters

A national trust charter lets a company offer certain services, such as custody, under federal supervision. Supporters see that as a path to clearer rules for crypto companies. The lawsuit shows that parts of the traditional banking sector are contesting how quickly that path is opening. The outcome could affect which crypto firms can operate as federally chartered trust banks in the US.
