Exchange Tokens in a Bull Market: BNB, OKB and Others Explained

Exchange tokens bull run guide: how BNB, OKB, CRO and others work, why they rise with trading activity, how burns work and the exchange risks to watch.

Exchange tokens tend to rise in a bull run because their value is tied to the businesses of the exchanges that issue them, and those businesses earn more when trading volume and new sign-ups surge. But the same link works in reverse: if an exchange runs into trouble, its token can collapse almost overnight, as FTX's FTT did in November 2022.

This guide explains how exchange tokens such as BNB, OKB and others work, what drove them in past cycles up to mid-2025, what to watch in 2026 and 2027 and how to manage the specific risks of holding them.

How Exchange Tokens Work

Most exchange tokens share a few features:

  1. 1Fee discounts when you pay trading fees with the token.
  2. 2Launchpad and launchpool access, where holders can participate in new token sales or farm new tokens.
  3. 3Burns or buybacks that permanently remove tokens, often on a schedule.
  4. 4Chain utility, where the exchange runs a blockchain that uses the token for gas.

The more of these that apply, the more ways demand can grow. Our explainer on what BNB is shows how one token combines several roles.

The Main Exchange Tokens

Token rules change, sometimes significantly, so check each exchange's official documentation. Our individual outlooks on the BNB price outlook and OKB price outlook go deeper.

What Drove Exchange Tokens in Past Cycles

  • 2017–2018: Exchange tokens emerged during the ICO boom, offering fee discounts. BNB launched in 2017.
  • 2019–2021: Launchpads, burns and new chains (such as BNB Chain, then called Binance Smart Chain) gave exchange tokens more utility. Many rallied strongly in the 2021 bull market as trading volume soared.
  • 2022: FTX collapsed in November after concerns about its finances, including how much of its balance sheet relied on FTT. FTT lost nearly all its value, and customers faced frozen withdrawals. Read what happens to your crypto if an exchange goes bankrupt.
  • 2023: Binance reached a settlement with US authorities in November, and its founder Changpeng Zhao stepped down as CEO. The episode showed how regulatory action can affect exchange tokens.

What to Watch in 2026

  • Trading volume and user growth on each exchange, especially if a broad rally attracts new retail investors.
  • Burn amounts and transparency. Are burns verifiable on-chain? Are they tied to revenue or to a fixed formula?
  • Launchpad activity, which tends to spike in bull markets and drives demand for holding the token.
  • Proof of reserves. Exchanges publishing credible reserve data reduce, but do not eliminate, solvency risk. See proof of reserves.

How to read a burn announcement

Burn headlines can sound larger than they are. When an exchange announces a burn, check:

  • The share of supply burned, not just the token count or dollar value.
  • Whether tokens came from the open market or from the exchange's own reserves. Burning tokens the company already held reduces supply on paper, but it does not involve buying from the market.
  • Whether the burn is verifiable on-chain at a published address.
  • Whether the formula changed compared with earlier burns.

What Could Matter in 2027

  • Regulation of exchanges in major markets, including licensing regimes such as the EU's MiCA, which could affect where exchanges operate and what perks they can offer.
  • Competition from decentralized exchanges and perpetual DEXs that do not require trusting a company.
  • Changes to token utility if exchanges restructure perks, burns or chains.
  • A cycle reversal. Lower volume in a downturn usually means smaller burns and weaker demand.

Risks Specific to Exchange Tokens

  • Exchange failure or fraud, the FTT scenario.
  • Concentration. Exchanges and insiders often hold large portions of supply.
  • Opaque mechanics. Burns and buybacks can be hard to verify.
  • Regulatory action that restricts services in key markets.
  • Double exposure. If you hold the exchange token on the same exchange, your risk is concentrated twice. Read our guide to exchange risk in a bull market.

Managing Risk

  1. 1Limit your allocation to any single exchange token; see position sizing basics.
  2. 2Do not keep all funds on one exchange, and consider moving long-term holdings to self-custody where the token supports it.
  3. 3Check the exchange's licensing and reserves using our exchange due diligence checklist.
  4. 4Take profits in stages in strong rallies, and avoid leverage.
  5. 5Beware of fake exchange apps and impersonators, which surge when markets are hot.

Bottom line

Exchange tokens can benefit from bull markets because their exchanges earn more when trading booms, and burns can reduce supply. But they concentrate risk in a single company. Watch volume, burns and reserves, follow regulatory developments through 2026 and 2027, and never hold more of an exchange token than you could afford to lose if that exchange failed.

Pertanyaan umum

Why do exchange tokens rise in a bull run?

In strong markets, trading volume and new users increase, which can raise exchange revenue, buyback or burn amounts, and demand for token perks such as fee discounts or launchpad access. Exchange tokens are tied to their exchange's business, so they tend to benefit when that business grows.

What are the risks of exchange tokens?

The biggest risk is the exchange itself: insolvency, hacks, regulatory action or loss of trust can crush the token, as FTX's FTT showed in 2022. Other risks include concentrated holdings by the exchange, opaque burn mechanics, changing token utility and regulatory pressure on exchanges in major markets.

How do exchange token burns work?

Many exchanges periodically remove tokens from circulation, often based on a formula tied to price or revenue. For example, BNB uses a quarterly auto-burn and also burns part of gas fees on BNB Chain. Burn rules vary by token and can change, so check each project's official documentation.

Is BNB an exchange token?

BNB began as Binance's exchange token and still provides benefits on Binance, but it is also the native gas token of BNB Chain. Its demand therefore depends both on Binance's business and on activity on the blockchain, which makes it different from tokens used only for exchange perks.
