Past crypto bull runs have typically lasted around one to two years from the start of a sustained rise to the cycle peak, with bitcoin's peaks arriving roughly 12 to 18 months after a halving in the 2012, 2016 and 2020 cycles. But there have only been a few full cycles, definitions vary, and the market's structure has changed, so these timelines describe history — not a schedule for 2026 or 2027.

Knowing the historical range is still useful. It helps you avoid two common mistakes: assuming a rally will last forever, and assuming it must end on a specific date. This guide covers the timing of past cycles, why durations vary, and how to plan without trying to time the end. For definitions and phases, see what a crypto bull run is.

Why Bull Run Durations Vary

Several forces stretch or shorten bull markets:

  1. 1Liquidity and interest rates. The 2020–2021 run took place with near-zero interest rates. When rates rose quickly in 2022, the bear market followed. See how interest rates affect crypto.
  2. 2New access routes. ICOs in 2017 and spot bitcoin ETFs from January 2024 brought new buyers at different speeds.
  3. 3Leverage. Heavily leveraged markets can end abruptly through liquidation cascades, cutting rallies short.
  4. 4Shocks. Exchange failures, hacks and stablecoin collapses can end a cycle faster than expected.
  5. 5Narratives. A strong new theme can extend a rally; a fading one can end it.

Bull Runs Are Not Straight Lines

Even the strongest bull runs included painful corrections. In 2017 and 2021, bitcoin had multiple drops of 20% to 30% or more along the way, and in 2021 it fell by roughly half between the April and November peaks. Many investors sold during those corrections, believing the run was over, and then watched prices recover.

Corrections like these are also where most of the damage happens to leveraged traders and to investors who bought at local highs with money they needed soon. A 30% drop inside a rising market feels identical to the start of a bear market while it is happening; only later does it become clear which one it was. Planning for that ambiguity, rather than expecting a smooth climb, makes it far easier to stick to your strategy.

This is why "how long" is a tricky question. A bull run can contain several mini bear markets, and two-peak cycles like 2021 make the "end" hard to identify until long after.

Altcoins Run on a Shorter Clock

Altcoin rallies have historically been compressed into a shorter window, often the last few months of a cycle, when risk appetite peaks. Individual sectors — DeFi, NFTs, memecoins, AI tokens — have had rallies lasting weeks rather than years. Our guide on altcoin season in 2027 explains the typical rotation.

What This Means for 2026 and 2027

Applying past timelines mechanically is risky. If you try, keep in mind:

  • The 2024 pattern break. A new high before the halving suggests ETF and institutional demand changed the timing of this cycle.
  • The next halving is expected around 2028. Whatever happens in 2026 and 2027 may be driven more by liquidity, regulation and adoption than by the halving calendar.
  • Small sample size. Three or four cycles cannot reliably predict the fourth or fifth.

Rather than asking "when does it end?", ask "what would I do if it ended next month, or ran for another year?" If your plan only works under one of those answers, it depends on a timing call that history suggests nobody can make reliably.

Planning Without Knowing the Duration

  1. 1Write a staged profit-taking plan — for example, selling portions at pre-set levels or when your crypto allocation exceeds a target share. See our crypto exit strategy for the next bull run.
  2. 2Avoid leverage. Corrections inside bull runs regularly wipe out leveraged traders.
  3. 3Size positions using position sizing and risk management basics so a sudden end to the rally does not cause lasting damage.
  4. 4Watch for late-cycle signs such as euphoric sentiment and heavy leverage, without treating any single one as a timer.
  5. 5Stay alert to scams. Fraud tends to peak when prices and attention are highest.

Bottom line

Crypto bull runs have historically lasted one to two years, with bitcoin peaks arriving roughly 12 to 18 months after a halving — but only a handful of cycles exist, the 2024 cycle already broke the pattern, and corrections inside bull runs are common. Use history as rough context, not a countdown clock, and rely on a written plan that works whether the next rally is short or long.

Sıkça sorulan sorular

How long does a crypto bull run usually last?

In past bitcoin cycles, the strongest phase of a bull market lasted roughly one to two years, often peaking about 12 to 18 months after a halving. But the start and end points depend on how you define a bull run, and only a few full cycles exist, so these figures describe history rather than a rule for the future.

How long did the 2021 bull run last?

Bitcoin began a sustained rise in the second half of 2020, peaked in April 2021, fell sharply over the summer, then set a new high in November 2021. Depending on where you start counting, the bull run lasted around a year to a year and a half. A bear market through 2022 followed.

How long do altcoin rallies last?

Broad altcoin rallies have usually been shorter than bitcoin's bull runs, often concentrated in the final months of a cycle. Individual sectors or memecoins can rise and fall within weeks. That compressed timing is one reason altcoins carry more risk than bitcoin.

Can I predict when the next bull run will end?

No one can reliably do that. Investors who try to sell exactly at the peak usually miss it. A more practical approach is to decide in advance how you will take partial profits as prices rise, so you do not depend on knowing when the run ends.
