The Bitcoin rainbow chart and similar cycle charts are useful as a picture of bitcoin's long-term history, but they are not reliable predictors of future prices. They are curves fitted to past data, and several of them — including the rainbow chart itself and the once-famous stock-to-flow model — have had to be revised or have failed when the market moved outside their expected path.

These charts are popular because they make a chaotic market look orderly and give clear-sounding labels like "buy" or "bubble." This guide explains how the main cycle charts work, what they get right, where they broke down up to mid-2025 and how to use them sensibly if a strong market develops in 2026 or 2027. For a broader view of the cycle concept, see crypto market cycles explained.

How the Bitcoin Rainbow Chart Works

The chart starts with bitcoin's price on a logarithmic scale, where each step up represents the same percentage change. A logarithmic regression curve is drawn through the price history, capturing the idea that bitcoin's growth has slowed over time in percentage terms. Colored bands are then placed above and below the curve, each with a playful label — from "basically a fire sale" at the bottom to "maximum bubble territory" at the top.

Its appeal is obvious: one glance suggests whether bitcoin is "cheap" or "expensive" relative to its history. But three things are worth remembering:

  1. 1The curve is chosen to fit past data. Any long price history can be fitted with a smooth curve.
  2. 2The band widths and labels are design choices. They are not derived from a statistical test.
  3. 3It has been revised. After bitcoin's price dropped below the lowest band during the 2022 bear market, the chart was redrawn so that price fit inside again. A model that must be refitted when it fails is describing, not predicting.

Our dedicated guide to the stock-to-flow model explains why it became so influential and why it lost credibility. For the moving-average basics, see moving averages explained.

Why Cycle Charts Feel So Convincing

  • Hindsight fit. A chart built after the fact will always look like it "called" past tops and bottoms.
  • Small samples. Bitcoin has had only a handful of full cycles. Patterns from four or five examples can easily be coincidence.
  • Changing market structure. ETFs, institutional investors and derivatives markets have changed who buys and sells bitcoin. In March 2024, bitcoin set a new all-time high before that year's halving, something earlier cycle charts did not anticipate.
  • Self-fulfilling attention. When many traders watch the same level, it can matter for a while — until it does not.

There is a deeper statistical issue too. A log-scale chart compresses enormous price moves into gentle slopes, which makes almost any long-term curve look like a good fit. On a linear chart, the same bands would span ranges so wide that they would offer little practical guidance. Keep that in mind whenever a chart seems to explain a decade of price action with a single smooth line.

How to Use Cycle Charts Sensibly in 2026 and 2027

If you look at these charts, use them as context rather than as signals:

  1. 1Combine several independent views. A price-based curve, an on-chain metric and a sentiment reading such as the Fear & Greed Index tell you more together than any one alone.
  2. 2Use them for zones, not exact levels. "Price is far above its long-term trend" is a reasonable observation; "the top will happen at this band" is not.
  3. 3Tie them to rules you set in advance. For example, increase dollar-cost averaging when several measures look historically cheap, and take partial profits in stages when several look historically stretched.
  4. 4Check the current version. Charts get revised. Compare the model's past versions with what actually happened.
  5. 5Follow the real price. The live Bitcoin price and history and our historical data are the ground truth; charts are interpretations.

Risk Management When Charts Point "Up"

Cycle charts are frequently used in marketing. Be cautious when someone uses one to justify a guaranteed outcome:

  • Ignore promises of guaranteed returns based on a chart.
  • Avoid leverage based on a model's "target" — models have missed by wide margins.
  • Keep position sizes sensible, following position sizing and risk management basics.
  • Be skeptical of paid signal groups that claim to know the cycle top.

Bottom line

The Bitcoin rainbow chart and other cycle charts are useful for seeing where price sits relative to its long-term history, but they are fitted to the past and have been revised or broken when markets changed. In 2026 and 2027, use them as one source of context alongside live data, combine them with a rules-based plan, and never treat any chart's colored band as a forecast.

คำถามที่พบบ่อย

Is the Bitcoin rainbow chart accurate?

It is a visual curve fitted to past prices, not a predictive model with a proven track record. It has described bitcoin's long-term upward trend reasonably well in hindsight, but its creators have had to redraw it after price moved outside its bands. Treat it as a rough picture of history, not a forecast.

How is the Bitcoin rainbow chart made?

It plots bitcoin's price on a logarithmic scale and draws a curve, based on a logarithmic regression, through its history. Colored bands above and below the curve are labeled with phrases ranging from buying opportunity to bubble territory. The band labels are a stylistic choice, not a statistical result.

What happened to the stock-to-flow model?

The stock-to-flow model, popularized in 2019, linked bitcoin's price to its scarcity as measured by the ratio of existing supply to new issuance. Its projections for the period after the 2020 halving were widely discussed, but bitcoin's price fell far below the model's path in 2022, and many analysts now regard it as unreliable.

Should I use cycle charts to decide when to buy or sell?

Use them, if at all, as one input among many. They can help you see where price sits relative to its long-term history, which may support a disciplined plan like dollar-cost averaging or staged profit-taking. Relying on any single chart to time the market has repeatedly disappointed investors.
